Quote #1"Six dollars is much to extravagant for a pair of shoes" -Mrs. Ryder, page 66
Significance-Elli was in search for a new pair of shoes, because her old shoes ripped. So when she went shopping for shoes she compared all of the prices very carefully. When she finally settled for a pair of brown pumps that she found in an outlet store, she gave the sales sip to Mrs Ryder. Even though Elli hates the color brown she picked them because they are practical, and they are year round shoes, unlike sandals. Once Elli gave Mrs. Ryder the sales slip she was amzed by how much she was willing to spend on shoes. This is when Mrs. Ryder said "Siad dollars is much to extravagant for a pair of shoes", because there where sandals for about two dollars and ninety nine cents. HIAS would not pay the entire six dollars so Elli and her mother had to come up with the difference for the shoes.
Question-Has there even been a time where when you were reading the book you put yourself in Elli's, or any of the other characters shoes?
Quote #2"Mommy, it was back breaking work. I was supposed to cut and fold five hundred huge sheets. I barely manged fifty before i developed a acute pain in my lower back. I'll have to explain to Mrs. Ryder that I am not capable of doing such hard physical labor. I hope she'll understand, and find more suitable employment for me." -Elli, page 79
Significance-This shows that Elli is too small, and is doing more work than she can handle. I belive Mrs. Ryder should have her doing somthing more simple, because from what it says that seems like a lot of work for anyone to acomplish. If I was Elli I would do the same and go talk to Mrs. Ryder about doing so much work.
Personal Connection-I can feel some of what Elli is feeling, because if I want to buy somthing big like a T.V., my parents would match whatever I had, and if I didnt have enough then, i would have to do a lot of very hard work, to make a couple dollars. I would have to keep doing a whole load of work until i had enough to where I had half the money to buy the item, and my parents would pay the difference.
Question-Has there ever been a time where you think someone is asking to much of you? (Like how Elli had to fold five hundred sheets of paper)
